🇬🇭Happy Ghana Independence Day!! No long po 🇬🇭Happy Ghana Independence Day!!

No long post, just proud to be Ghanaian 🇬🇭😊
Dropping in with your reminder that white supremac Dropping in with your reminder that white supremacy is still alive and well in all parts of society.

This week was a strong reminder of why we need to do the work we are doing. Here are some examples of what I saw online this week:

👉🏿 people are constantly talking about the need for more food banks and not really talking about food justice
👉🏿 politicians in the City of Toronto are attempting to stop a Black man from building tiny homes and providing shelter for those experiencing homelessness
👉🏿 those considered food policy and food systems ‘experts’ are always white
👉🏿 COVID-19, COVID-19, COVID-19 and the disproportionately negative impact it is having on communities of colour
👉🏿 wages are too low and the cost of housing is too high

We each play a role in dismantling oppressive systems. Discomfort is an opportunity for learning and growing. If you’re a nutrition professional, and don’t really know where to start, join the CEDAR community and course, and begin to figure out your next steps.

📣We've transitioned CEDAR from a live 4 week course, to a 6 module course that you can complete at your own pace!

👋🏾My goal is to reach more nutrition professionals, and through that, help make the health and food systems more anti-oppressive and anti-racist.

🤔The conversation on race and culture is missing in dietetics. This course is designed to help you start the journey of unpacking how the wellness industry perpetuates the oppression of racialized and culturally diverse communities. In CEDAR, you will learn how to move away from prescribing diets and 'fixing' people, to dismantling systems of oppression that keep people sick.

🔗Click the link in my bio to pre-order the course! The course will be available on March 8th, 2021.
📣In 2020, The City of Toronto declared that the 📣In 2020, The City of Toronto declared that the first Monday in March would be known as Black Mental Health Day.

Racism is prevalent throughout all parts of life, and causes poor mental health as well as generational trauma.

Often, racism has denied Black people the opportunity to live life with dignity and peace and has denied us joy.

The mental health of Black people is a growing concern and there is often a lack of culturally appropriate, anti-oppressive and safe supports for the Black community.

📣Health practitioners ➡️ it’s not only overt forms of racism that harm the physical and mental health of Black people. It is often the daily experiences of covert anti-Black racism cause lifelong harm. As health professionals, we need to do better to show up for Black people each and everyday so that everyone has a chance to good health and food justice. If you are seeking more supports to learn about anti-racism equity in healthcare, enroll in the CEDAR course (link in bio).

💛My dear Black people, give your self the time, space and support you need to check in and take care of your mental health. You deserve it.

🎢Last week was what I’d like to call a rollercoaster of a week. I had my high highs and my low lows and yet, it was a reminder for me to make time for small moments of joy in everyday life.

💛 I hope you will too.

Repost from @sarahdoesnutrition

“This week on the pod 🥁🥁🥁...

Rosie Mensah, MPH, RD 🎉

Rosie is a Toronto-based dietitian and food justice advocate doing AMAZING things ‼️

To name just a few, she was recently appointed as a member of the Canadian Food Policy Advisory Council, is a founding member of @dietitiansforfoodjustice, and just launched her own course, CEDAR! CEDAR stands for Culture, Equity, Diversity and Race in Dietetics and aims to fill a gap in anti-racism, anti-oppression, and cultural competency in dietetics.

In addition to all her amazing work, Rosie is also a natural at being on podcasts! This is an episode you won’t want to miss.

📣I am excited to share that I am one of the 23 📣I am excited to share that I am one of the 23 members of the Canadian Food Policy Advisory Council. I am looking forward to sharing my perspective, discussing the need for systems level change, and centring the voices of those most marginalized by our unjust food system.

✊🏿Just a few years ago I was rallying in the streets in Jane Finch to fight for food justice in my community. Now, I will bring my knowledge as a community activist, as an educator, and as a dietitian along with my lived experiences, to advocate for change at the federal level. #grateful

🙌🏾I am excited to connect with other experts on the Council and work together to ensure that our food system is equitable for us all. #righttofood
