5 easy ways to eat healthy at home

With a full blown pandemic happening right now, we are spending a lot of time at home; which is leading to many changes in our daily routines. This includes changes what we eat and how we move. Luckily, we have an opportunity to maintain good health practices, even when staying at home due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) . Following these 5 tips will help you to eat better at home. The way to good health can be made easier by following a few simple tips. Small steps done everyday towards your health can make a BIG difference. This is a marathon and NOT a sprint. Be kind to yourself and trust your body. 

Here are 5 tips to help stay healthy at home.

1. Reduce your portion sizes.

When people think about eating healthier, many assume that this requires a complete over-haul of their current diet. The truth is that all foods can be part of a healthy diet. Nowadays, it’s pretty easy to consume more calories than we need with bigger portions and wanting the ‘best value’ for your money. We often get lost in the portion size of food rather than the food quality, and how it fuels your body. Before completing cutting foods from your diet, try eating smaller portions of foods that might not be the most nutritious options. If you’re worried about not feeling full while eating smaller portions of food, increase your intake of fruits and vegetables with your meals. The fibre in these foods will help you feel full for a longer period of time. 

2. Add fruits or vegetables to all of your meals.

Fruits and vegetables are nutrient packed and can be made part of any meal. Not only do they add colour and variety to meals, they come in a range of textures and of course different tastes for every palette! Aside from the aesthetics of adding fruits and vegetables to your meals, they have many health benefits including weight management, reduced risk of heart disease, and improved overall health.

Currently, many governments are asking the public to only go grocery shopping once per week. If you are concenrned about your access to fresh fruit and vegetables, you have other options the included frozen or canned good. Frozen produce is an excellent alternative to fresh produce. Frozen produce is frozen at their peak ripeness; which mean they are frozen when they have the most nutrients.

3. Drink more water

Drinking water is important for many reasons. Our bodies are need water for to maintain normal function and regulation, thus, it is important to keep ourselves hydrated regularly. Water is essential for normal body processes and can also help curb your appetite. Also, it is not uncommon to confuse hunger for thirst. Drink water throughout the day to keep you feeling great!

4. Don't skip meals

Going long periods of time without eating can leave you feeling tired, irritated, and lethargic ..AKA HANGRY (real thing). Many people skip meals on a day to day basis for different reasons, this may include waking up to late to make breakfast, feeling guilty from over indulging the night before, or very commonly, wanting to lose weight. There is a misconception that skipping meals leads to faster/greater weight loss. Not only is this false for your weight loss goals, but it can lead to decreased productivity, stronger food cravings which can lead you to eat more. Skipping meals means that your metabolism slows down, your brain power gets  drained and you can’t be your best self! In general, if you want to live your healthy life it’s important to eat healthy meals and snacks throughout the day. If you are hungry do not restrict yourself of food. Pay more attention to what you are putting into your body and eat with intention.

5. Buddy Up!

Making changes to your diet is a lot easier when you an do it with someone else. When you start something new whether it’s starting your first blog, or wanting to make changes to your lifestyle, you may get a lot of push back from friends and family that may make you feel insecure about your decision. Having friend to check-in with, swap recipes with who share’s similar health and fitness goals and habits is a great way to stay motivated and focused on your goals.
